I fully support the opinion about "No matter if it looks bad, it still can be a lot of fun". I know a person, who always says something like "man, that looks awful. I hate that" (no matter if a PC-game, an old game from the late 90's, or even from the early 90's), and i admit, that i don't like him for that (but also many other bad sides of his character). When i, for example play FFIV (the SNES Version), then i know it dosn't have too good GFX, but still it is so much fun with all that content and stuff. Another example is, that i still like to play RPGs from the 90's (mostly SNES and Playstation), as they are my favorites content and gameplay-wise. Who knows Alundra on the Playstation for example. There already were lots of other Games like Final Fantasy (which could crush Alundra in terms of GFX with all that render and 3D-stuff), but i did like both games exactly equal. And for the SNES-area, there is Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia, Soul Blazer and more, that i still really like to play. To todays standards they are looking "classic", but i still like them, even when i never played them in my childhood. And to be honest, i somewhat hate Final Fantasy from the eleventh installment upwards, as it always just tries so hard to be cool, but it really isn't, as it...just sucks ^^. I also would prefer the good old "Command and Conquer Red Alert" over "Command and Conquer Generals" all the time, as it just is so well done for an Game from it's time. This for me dosn't means, that a good looking game is automatically bad, but how is it said again..."don't judge a book by it's cover", even when it is already dusty. This also goes for SMBX, as i really like "Mario vs. the Moon Base" for example, which has custom-GFX, but could certainly live aswell without custom-GFX. I didn't play really much SMBX-episodes, but i never would say, that custom-GFX are doing help an episode, other than change it's atmosphere. Why i am using so many custom-GFX? Because i just like to make them, and because i like to see, how many ideas i can bring up. It's somekind of challenge maybe, but it never does make it a better level or episode gameplay-wise, to use them. Because of that, i only build levels, when i have a nice or even cool idea for that level, in my opinion. One can say, i like classic vanilla-levels quite as much, as i like custom-GFX ones. In a nutshell it is like this for me: The level (gameplay)is the body, and the GFX is the clothing of that body, not more. And as we all know, not every fancy clothing fits to every person, no matter how expansive it is.
